He also provides statistical consulting service to faculty members and graduate students of NSAC, and occasionally to researchers from various departments of the Government of Nova Scotia. Tess has been active in international development projects. Currently, he is the Project Director of the CIDA funded Tier 1, 2008-2014, $3M project in Ethiopia entitled “Post-harvest Management to Improve Livelihoods (PHMIL)”. This project is funded under the University Partnership program to enhance the capacity of Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (JUCAVM) in Ethiopia. The Project is being implemented by NSAC, McGill University and JUCAVM.

The PHMIL Project aims to improve the livelihood and food security of Ethiopians by i) addressing PHMVA challenges of the agricultural sector by focusing on reducing PH losses and increasing food availability and marketability, and ii) creating opportunities by adding value to agricultural products, changing waste products to resources, monitoring quality and improving products to maintain nutritional quality and achieve export-level standards. Since these challenges and opportunities are also recognized by the Government of Ethiopia, the goal of the Project is to contribute to the Ethiopian government’s priority of food security through increased availability of food and the creation of an enabling environment that supports the commercialization of agriculture. To achieve this goal, the purpose of the Project is to increase the capacity of JUCAVM to provide high-quality training, research and service in PHMVA to address the challenges of its stakeholders.

To achieve the goal and the purpose, the Project was designed with the following five main outcomes:

1. A newly created PHM Department offers newly developed B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs in PHM.

2. Human resource capacity within the PHM Department is enhanced

3. Laboratory, library and IT capacity of the PHM Department is enhanced.

4. PHMVA Network of university, industry, government, and community groups is established.

5. Gender sensitive, HIV/AIDS responsive, culturally relevant and environmentally sustainable PHMVA technologies developed and disseminated to industry and community stakeholders through demonstration sites and other outlets.

Hi, my name is Wei, and I am 20 years old. I come from China. I am from Fujian province, which is a province on the southeast coast of mainland China. Its area is 121, 400 km2 and its population (2010) is 36,894,216. Fujian is renowned for its china, Chinese tea, daffodil and many tourist attractions. Now I am studying Agricultural Economics at the NSAC (Nova Scotia Agricultural College)

Life here is quite different, different culture, cold weather, less people etc. Sometimes I may get culture shock or language problems, though Canadians are very friendly, and I enjoy life in Canada. The most impressive thing in Truro is that I visited a Canadian family, we had dinner together and played some games I hadn’t played before.

Wei will be leading the discussion following the film on China, Sunday, January 22nd at 7pm.

Souhael will be leading the discussion on France following the film.

Souhael Bouallagui was born in Nancy, in the North-East part of France in 1982. After studying computer science and working as a computer programmer he decided to go back to school and to train for a profession that would better suit his interest in travel, languages and teaching.

He has been a 'French as a Second Language' teacher since 2007. Over the years, his work has led him to live in different countries. After graduating he lived in Germany where he worked as a Linguistics analyst. He then moved to the Czech Republic to work as a teacher at Alliance Française (a French institution present in many countries to promote the French culture and language) in Pardubice.

During his stay, he met his girlfriend, who is from Truro Nova Scotia. After spending a year in France together they decided to move to Truro where Souhael is now working for the Université Sainte Anne. He is teaching French primarily to civil servants.

Souhael is enjoying Canada so much he hopes to be able to spend many more years here.

___
